What is Volleyball?

Volleyball is a type of game which consists of six players per team inside the court. The players use their hands to make the ball pass across the net and the touch the court within the opponent’s playing area before it can be returned. A team is allowed only three touches of the ball before it be returned over the net. Also volleyball has different skills that a player must be learned first before he/she plays this game.

“The (volleyball) player is not a soloist, but a member of an orchestra. When that player begins to think, ‘I’m special,’ (The player) is finished.”  Bernardo Rezende

WHAT ARE THE BASIC SKILLS IN VOLLEYBALL?

SERVING
Serving is an important part of the game of volleyball. It is the act of putting the ball in the other part of the court by a player sounds simple. There are two most common type of service in volleyball. The underhand and the overhand serves are described below.

UNDERHAND
The server should be at the end of the endline which is called the service area as described in the rules. This type of serve use in volleyball where the player serving the ball while holding it about waist high where they slightly toss it up and hit the ball with their opposite closed fist using an underhand motion. The top of their closed fist hits the bottom of the ball.

OVERHAND SERVICE
An overhand serve in volleyball is a serve in which the player tosses the ball with one hand and strikes it in the air above their head with the other hand.
Passing
The player performs a pass when s/he hits the ball around the torso level – with forearms of the straightened arms. The player moves arms unattached under the approaching ball, stops and takes a well balance and low passing position. The two types of passes are the forearm pass and the overhead pass.

FOREARM PASS
When it comes to passing, forearm passing is the main technique used in volleyball. The forearm pass is the act of controlling the ball in such a way that it’s directed to the setter. The setter needs an accurate pass in order to set an attacker.

OVERHEAD PASS
The “set” is an overhead pass used to change the direction of the dig and put the ball in a good position for the spikers. It is usually the team’s second contact. Setting is the tactical centre of Volleyball. A setter must be good enough to keep the big blockers from dominating the net.

HIT/ATTACK/SPIKE
Typically the third contact when a player uses one open hand and swings at the ball to send it over the net is called a “hit/attack/spike”. The player who hits the ball is called the “hitter/attacker/spiker”. These three terms are used interchangeable.

BLOCKING
Volleyball blocking is defined as deflecting the ball coming from your opponent’s attack hit. Blocking is a skill in volleyball used to prevent the opponent from a successful attack hit. A block technique is used to deflect the ball coming from an attacker.

DIGGING
The job of a volleyball digger is to prevent the ball from hitting the floor after being spiked by the opposing team. To dig, the volleyball players must anticipate the spike and be prepared to quickly dive in any direction.
These are the different kind of skills that an aspiring player will learn and enhance first before playing the game of volleyball.
